Round 2 (Sequences) Question 3 of 6

Listen to the three music extracts on this page and work out the next in the sequence. For some questions in this round, the solution will be a specific piece of music, but for others, you may suggest any suitable work to complete the sequence. You don’t have to identify every extract.

Clue 1 – Won by Italy.

Clue 2 – Won by Spain.

Clue 3 – Won by Germany.

What comes fourth?

ANSWERSClip 1 is from Brahms’ German Requiem (Monteverdi Choir, Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, John Eliot Gardiner). Clip 2 is from one of Herbert Howell’s Two South African Settings (Catherine Pierard with Julius Drake [Piano]). Clip 3 is part of Respighi’s Brazilian Impressions (Philharmonia Orchestra, Geoffrey Simon). Germany, South Africa and Brazil were hosts of the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup, so fourth in the sequence would be a work with Russia in the title, hosts of the 2018 World Cup – e.g. Rimsky Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival Overture.
