Round 1 (Connections) Question 1 of 6

Listen to as many of the music extracts on this page and work out the connection between them. You don’t have to identify every extract.

Clue 1 – A classic film score by Max Steiner, helping tell the story of a famed lothario.

Clue 2 – A popular Donizetti comedy about the pitfalls of the generation gap.

Clue 3 – Richard Strauss’s orchestral score has a prominent part for solo cello.

Clue 4 – Verdi opera set in Spain.

ANSWERSClip 1 is from Max Steiner’s film score for The Adventures of Don Juan (National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Gerhardt). Clip 2 is an extract from the aria Quel guardo il cavaliere from Donizetti’s comic opera Don Pasquale (Ying Huang [Soprano] with the LSO under James Conlon]. Clip 3 is from Richard Strauss’s orchestral tone poem Don Quixote (Tim Hugh [Cello], LSO, Previn). Clip 4 is the beginning of the Auto da fè scene from Verdi’s Don Carlo (Chorus and Orchestra of La Scala Milan, under Claudio Abbado). So the connection is that they are all Dons.
