Round 1 (Connections) Question 2 of 6

Listen to as many of the music extracts on this page and work out the connection between them. You don’t have to identify every extract.

Clue 1 – Rosenman’s score for James Dean’s first starring rôle.

Clue 2 – A composer from Bradford depicts the landscapes around him.

Clue 3 – The famous cowboy opera.

Clue 4 – Is it an overture? Is it a tone poem? Elgar’s reminiscences of Italy.

ANSWERSClip 1 is an extract from Rosenman’s film score for East of Eden (John Adams conducting the London Sinfonietta). Clip 2 is from Delius’ North Country Sketches (the Ulster Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley). Clip 3 is part of the aria Ch’ella mi creda libero from Puccini’s opera The Girl of the Golden West (Jussi Bjorling with the Stockholm Royal Opera Orchestra under Nils Grevillius). Finally, Clip 4 is from Elgar’s In the South (Scottish National Orchestra with Sir Alexander Gibson). So the connection is Points of the Compass.
